Kevin Snyder was a typical 9 year old little boy. To hear his Mom describe him, Kevin hit the ground running from the minute his eyes opened in the morning. In August 2005 Kevin complained of having pain in his side. His parents, John and Denise, and his pediatrician, knowing how active Kevin is and his having just completed ice hockey camp, were unconcerned at first. When Kevin's pain did not go away after two weeks, they took him to the doctor who then sent him for further testing. A mass about the size of a softball was found in his abdomen. It was discovered about a two weeks later, after in depth testing at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, that Kevin had a rare form of cancer called ATRT (Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumor). There are less than 500 cases diagnosed in the world per year. It was discovered in the last 3-5 years. It is typically known as a brain/spinal cancer, but Kevin's was in his abdominal cavity and spread quickly throughout his lymph nodes. The tumor grew from softball sized to about the size of a football in a matter of weeks. From initial diagnosis to his passing was less than two months. He passed peacefully in CHOP early in the morning of October 21, 2005, only 3 weeks shy of his 10th birthday. This Memorial Foundation was created by his family to raise money for research into the pediatric cancer ATRT. In our first year we were able to raise $10,000 and presented Children's Hospital with a check at their candle lighting ceremony in December 2006. This website is dedicated to Kevin and we will endeavor to raise as much money as possible for our cause. Please email us at csciubba@yahoo.com Chris Sciubba is the current President of the foundation. An email address for the foundation will replace this asap. |
