| The Kevin J. Snyder Memorial Foundation was established in January of 2006 with the mission of helping to find a cure to a very rare and virtually unknown form of cancer called ATRT (Atypical Teratoid/Rhabdoid Tumor). This form of cancer strikes at the very heart of us all: our children. Kevin was only 9 years old when he was diagnosed with the disease in late August of 2005 by the doctors at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Up until that time, Kevin was involved in a variety of activities up to and including his favorite sport, ice hockey. He spent much of his time that summer with his family fishing, crabbing and playing in the pool with his cousins. By October of that same year, Kevin had succumbed to the devastating power of the illness in less than 8 weeks from his first diagnosis. Yet from the day that Kevin was told of his prognosis, he never asked "why me" or asked anyone to feel sorry for him. He stayed strong throughout his ordeal and taught us that the most important thing is to value your time spent among those you love. He had a great sense of humor, was always ready to lend a helping hand and had a physical and mental toughness that few can replicate. A scholarship award of $2,500 shall be given to a graduating senior from Vineland High School who best exemplifies the qualities and characteristics of Kevin J. Snyder. Interested applicants should meet the following criteria: 1. Participation in Vineland High School Athletics, securing a varsity letter in that sport. 2. In a 1,000 word essay student must demonstrate their leadership abilities and adherence to a set of principles, ideals, ethics and moral values that are consistent with the characteristics of Kevin J. Snyder. 3. TWO letters of recommendation, one from a head coach during this school year that reflects strong support for the student as a leader on and off the field of play. 4. Student must carry at least a 2.5 GPA or above. See the guidance office of Vineland High School for a more descriptive information sheet. |
